What is TVY (Theatre for the Very Young?)
Theatre for the Very Young is a form of live theatre performance created specifically for children ages 2–5 and their grown-ups. It emphasizes sensory play, interaction, and music rather than traditional storytelling. At To The Moon Theatre Collective, our performances encourage curiosity, imagination, and shared experience between children and adults.
What age is Theatre for the Very Young designed for?
TYV performances are intended for children from two years old through five years old — though enjoyable for all ages! Every aspect of our shows (sound, lighting, movement, and interaction) is tailored to meet the developmental needs of this age group.
Can my child move around during the performance?
Yes! Movement is integral to Theatre for the Very Young. Children are encouraged to interact, explore, and respond to the performance, making each show a unique experience for every audience. There are several moments during the performance where children might hold objects from the show, or participate in a call-and-response.
Do caregivers stay with children during the performance?
Yup! Grown-ups are encouraged to sit, play, and interact with their children throughout the performance. Theatre for the Very Young is a shared experience that strengthens and supports early learning.
What happens after the show?
After each performance, children are invited to participate in a fifteen-minute post-show sensory play, where they can explore the performance space and interact with objects from the show. Actors are present to guide the experience, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning. This activity extends the performance, helps children process what they saw, and supports early development through play-based exploration.
Is Theatre for the Very Young sensory-friendly?
Yes. Every performance is sensory-aware, meaning lighting, sound levels, and movement are designed to be comfortable and welcoming for young children. We create an inclusive environment where children can engage safely and at their own pace. To The Moon Theatre Collective encourages our young audiences to leave and re-enter the space as needed.
